Mineral and arid, the South is a scenery of grassy savannah, and great spaces. It is the land of Bara herdsman and zebu’s thieves. The Isalo massif and the Andringitra are located in the heart of this semi-arid area. Despite of its harshness, this region has an exceptional natural and human wealth, as prove the fine tombstones decorated with totems named “alohalo” that we can find along the road. Further south, the southern end of the island is the driest and wildest part of Madagascar. The “thorn island” is home to many extraordinary types of plants (Didiereas, Alluaudia…), as well as reptiles and unexpected birds.
