Antoetra
Antoetra
Village in the Central Highlands of Madagascar and gateway to Zafimaniry territory, recognized by UNESCO for its mastery of wood carving.
Antoetra is a village in the Central Highlands of Madagascar, located approximately 40 km east of Ambositra, in the Amoron'i Mania region. It serves as the gateway to Zafimaniry territory, a people recognized by UNESCO for their mastery of wood carving. Antoetra is the only village in this territory accessible by car, making it the natural starting point for exploring the surrounding hamlets on foot.
Why visit Antoetra
Antoetra offers a direct encounter with Zafimaniry culture, set among terraced rice paddies, rolling hills, and remnant forests. The village remains rural, with limited tourist infrastructure, making it a sought-after stop for travelers seeking an understated experience centered on craftsmanship, sculpted wooden architecture, and walking from one hamlet to the next.
It is also a logical starting point for hikes to more remote villages (Ifasina, Sakaivo, Faliarivo), inaccessible by vehicle.
History and Zafimaniry culture
The Zafimaniry have inhabited these remote mountains of southeastern Amoron'i Mania since the 18th century. Their culture developed around wood: architecture, furniture, tools, and ritual objects bear geometric motifs passed down from generation to generation. These motifs, often inspired by nature, express a cosmology and worldview unique to the group.
In 2003, UNESCO inscribed the Zafimaniry's mastery of woodworking on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This heritage remains threatened by deforestation, which reduces access to traditional timber species, and by rural exodus, which distances young generations from learning these skills. Local reforestation and responsible tourism initiatives seek to support the transmission of this craftsmanship.
What to see and do
The village and its sculpted houses
Traditional wooden houses finely carved with geometric motifs constitute Antoetra's major architectural appeal. Shutters, doors, and posts bear these motifs that define the Zafimaniry people.
The Wednesday market
Every Wednesday, Antoetra hosts a local market where agricultural products, crafts, and carved wooden objects are traded. It is one of the best times to observe rural life and meet inhabitants from neighboring hamlets who come to shop.
The Tsangambato standing stones
Scattered around the village, the erected stone stelae (Tsangambato) honor ancestors. Inhabitants leave offerings—honey, coins, rum—according to precise ritual codes. It is important to respect these sites and seek guidance from a local guide before approaching them.
Hike to Sakaivo and Fanandrana waterfall
Sakaivo is located approximately 10 km from Antoetra and is accessible only on foot, via mountain trails. There you can taste galeoka, an artisanal beverage made from sugar cane. Nearby, the sacred Fanandrana waterfall is a place of reflection for the Zafimaniry, to be approached with discretion.
When to visit Antoetra
The Central Highlands enjoy a temperate highland climate, cooler than the rest of Madagascar. Daytime temperatures are mild and can drop significantly at night, especially during the dry season.
- April to November: dry season, trails are passable, favorable conditions for hiking to Zafimaniry hamlets. Nights are cool in June-July; bring warm clothing.
- December to March: rainy season, tracks often degraded, difficult access from Ambositra, and hikes compromised.
It is recommended to check the condition of the track before departure, particularly at the beginning and end of the rainy season.
