Montagne des Français - Guide Madagascar - Détours Madagascar

Montagne des Français

Located east of Diégo-Suarez along the road to Ramena, the Tendrombohitr’Antsingy, or Montagne des Français, overlooks the bay. Its name dates back to the 20th century, when it was occupied by French military forces.

This mountain offers a picturesque setting for hikes, with trails adorned by baobabs, Pachypodiums (resembling miniature baobabs), spiny plants, aloes, and stunning orchids. The valley is teeming with wildlife, including birds, lizards, chameleons, and lemurs, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Montagne des Français is also Madagascar’s oldest archaeological site. In the Andavakoera Gorge, researchers discovered archaeological layers containing bones and pottery fragments dating back to the 12th century BCE, along with remains of giant tortoises and large lemurs.
