Red Circus
Red Circus
About thirty minutes from Mahajanga, the Red Circus unfolds twelve mineral tones, fairy chimneys and silicified wood sculpted by erosion.
The Red Circus is a geological site located near Mahajanga, on the northwest coast of Madagascar. Carved by erosion into layers of sandstone and sediments, it displays a palette of colors ranging from deep red to pale pink, punctuated by fairy chimneys and fossilized wood.
Why visit the Red Circus
The site's appeal lies in the combination of several rare elements across a single expanse: twelve recorded mineral hues (from intense red to pale pink, passing through ochres and yellows), erosive formations shaped like chimneys, silicified tree trunks and water sources flowing through the canyon. It offers useful insights into the sedimentary geology of the Boeny region and naturally complements a beach stay in Mahajanga.
History and context of the site
Before its current name, the site was locally known as Anahidava, Ankadibe and Andranomamy. It was renamed Red Circus in 1999, in reference to its dominant colors.
Geologically, the canyon is approximately 1.8 million years old. It was formed by the progressive erosion of successive layers of sandstone and sediments, which explains the visible stratification on its walls today.
A local legend tells that the site was once home to a dinosaur, with certain excavations being its traces. The Red Circus also served, at one time, as a firing range for British soldiers—an use likely connected to the brief Allied occupation of Madagascar during World War II.
What to see on site
- Fairy chimneys: slender rock formations sculpted by differential erosion, particularly striking in raking light.
- The palette of twelve hues: from deep red to pale pink, with passages of ochre and yellow depending on the strata.
- Silicified wood: fossilized tree trunks transformed into stone, witnesses to an ancient vegetal environment.
- Water sources: several streams traverse the site and create contrast with the dry mineral surroundings.
- Endemic flora: traveler's palms and plants adapted to sandy substrate.
- Colored clay: extracted locally, it is used to craft handmade sand bottles found in Mahajanga's markets.
Practical information
The site is explored on foot, along unmarked trails. Plan approximately 1 to 2 hours depending on pace and photo stops. A few useful points:
- Equipment: closed shoes, hat, sufficient water, sunscreen. The site offers little shade.
- Photography: raking light in the early morning or late afternoon enhances relief and colors.
- Guidance: it is possible to visit independently; a local guide provides useful insights into geology and traditional uses.
- Organized excursions: the nearby Antsanitia Resort, an eco-lodge, offers guided outings with 4x4 transport and picnic.
When to go
The dry season, from May to October, offers the best conditions: passable tracks, clear light and comfortable temperatures. The November to March period, more humid and hot, can make access difficult after rains. During the day, favor early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the light on the colored walls.
How to get there
The Red Circus is located north of Mahajanga, near Amborovy.
- By car: paved road to Amborovy, then dirt track to the site. A 4x4 is recommended for the final stretch. The journey from central Mahajanga typically takes about thirty minutes depending on track conditions.
- On foot: a hike of approximately two hours connects Mahajanga to the site, through villages and coastal landscapes. Only consider this in cool weather and with a good water supply.
- With an operator: the organized excursion option remains most practical for combining transport, guiding and lunch.
What to see in the region
The Red Circus fits well into a broader circuit across Madagascar:
- Mahajanga and its waterfront, a logical base for exploring the site.
- The Virgin's Island, another nearby coastal stop.
- The Avenue of the Baobabs, further south on the west coast.
- Ranomafana National Park, for rainforest landscapes.
