  • After breakfast, head south. We cross the characteristic landscapes of the Highlands by taking a winding road lined with a mosaic of various cultures fields and rice fields arranged in terraces.

Antsirabe - Manandona

  • We continue our route to the beautiful Manandona Valley, on the foothills of Mt Ibity, where we settle down in a cottage with simple comfort (bathroom outside and bucket shower).

Manandona - Fianarantsoa

  • We hit the road again towards Fianarantsoa, the historical and cultural capital of the Betsileo region. It is the Malagasy city which gathers the highest number of cultural monuments and schools.

    Just like Antananarivo, the city is divided in three parts:

    • The Upper town, where used to be the Palace of the Merina Governor, and where we can admire today protestant churches, a Lutheran school, the brick Tuscan-style Cathedral, the Jesuit school of Ambozotany, and the Antsenakely Square where is held a small market, as its name indicates.
    • The New town : the administration neighborhood, where is also held the zoma (Friday's market).
    • The Lower town Ampasambazaha, heart of the city where are located the trading Chinese and Indian neighborhoods.

    Fianarantsoa is also well known for its tea plantations and its vineyard.

  • Across the patchwork of terrace rice fields and diverse crops where are all shades of green are present, road to Ambalavao famous for its vineyards.

  • We meet the guides and porters for the first time, who will be our fellow travelers for the next 5 days.
    We will begin our journey by the discovery of the special reserve of Anja. Site managed by the village community, which shelters in small colonies these lemurs with annelated tail, makis catta.
    Day hike through the Betsileo landscapes. Decoration dominated by agriculture, livestock. Zebu herd trails will also be on the walk.
    We pass the pastoral village of Manampotsy. We set up our first bivouac not far from the village on the next hill.

  • Our second day of hiking is dominated by a landscape formed of granite massif.
    Desert decoration but at the same time very rich in greasy plants such as the Kalanchöes, Alöes and the Pachypodiums, accompanied by a presence of forest, sometimes stuck in the valleys. In the distance, the high peaks of Andringitra are visible.
    Ascents and descents succeed one another in these wide open spaces.
    Arrival at Camp Belambo, where we can say that we are in the heart of Andringitra National Park. Installation of our camp for the night.

  • On the third day, we leave early in the morning to reach Andriampotsy at 2 000 m of altitude, the starting point of the 2nd highest peak of Madagascar Peak Boby, peaking at 2,658 m. Here, the landscapes are lunar, the Malagasy people call this place "the plateau of the Extra-terrestrials".
    A small detour to take a closer look at the two sacred waterfalls: Riambavy (female waterfall) and Riandahy (mal waterfall), passing through the Jajofo cave.
    We will camp in Andriampotsy at 2050m of altitude, starting point for our ascent of the Pic d'Imarivolanitra the next day.

  • Early in the morning we join the Canyon des Makis, beginning of our hike with our guide to the discovery of this massive sandstone ruiniforme very different from Andringitra.

  • We start with the forests of the canyon and then climb up the plateau carved by erosion, where a beautiful day of hiking awaits us. This massive sandstone has been shaped since the Jurassic in strange forms ruiniformes.
    These lands belong to the Bara people, an ethnic group of the South.
    Our hiking route will take us to the place called "the natural pool". After the heat of the day, a swim in the pool is welcome.

    The visit can be done in zebu charette or on foot; or relax to enjoy the beach, a beautiful invitation to swim in this beautiful lagoon.
