The spirit of travel

The first rays of sunlight pierce the morning mist that envelops the sacred hills of Imerina. From Ampangabe, ancestral paths wind between emerald rice paddies and perched villages, where the echoes of the great king Andrianampoinimerina still resound. Each step reveals a piece of history: defensive ditches dug into red laterite, stone burial monuments bearing witness to a glorious past, sacred forests preserved on the slopes of Antsahadinta.

The route follows the ridges of Ambatomalaza where the silhouettes of twelve royal hills stretch as far as the eye can see. In the villages, elders tell the legends of the unifying sovereign while children rush up, astonished to encounter hikers in the heart of this authentic countryside. The descent towards the Andromba river ends beautifully: a traditional flat-bottomed barge glides silently between lush banks, bringing the walkers back to civilization via the waterways that the king once traveled himself.

This three-day hike offers a rare immersion into the Merina soul, far from classic tourist circuits, in the footsteps of a monarch who shaped the history of Madagascar.

Walking tour among the remains of Southern Imerina

Antananarivo - Ampangabe Car transfer to Ampangabe on the RN7. Early departure from the capital to avoid traffic (+/- 06:30). Ampangabe - Ambohijoky On foot, via a footbridge, we cross the Andromba river. Quickly, we gain some altitude and arrive on the ridge. View of small villages with their characteristic defensive ditches from a specific tradition of Merina culture from past centuries. By small paths, we follow the ridge line to head towards Ambohijoky, the "hill of the eldest," an allusion to the oldest of the 12 wives of King Andrianampoinimerina who lived here. Ambohijoky - Ambatomalaza We reach villages built on the edge of the rice paddies in the valley of the Sisaony river. We progress through the plain meeting villagers, accompanied by the joyful cries of children, amazed to see hikers in the middle of the countryside. Our camp is established to the East of the Ambatomalaza rocky line. Large granite blocks represent perfect playing grounds for climbing enthusiasts.

From hill to hill to reach Antsahadinta

Early in the morning, we quickly climb onto the Ambatomalaza ridge line unfolding towards the north. The view is splendid over the great plain leading to the Madagascar capital. We continue our journey towards the valley and then the hill opposite, towards the west. Antsahadinta comes into view. It is easily recognizable by its sacred forest which rises in tiers on its south flank.

This sacred hill is a living testimony to the history of the Merina kingdoms. Once we have crossed the remains of defensive ditches, we enter the village. We leave our belongings in the shade of fig trees and begin to visit the places steeped in History. We set up our bivouac not far from the village.

On foot along the King's Path and the Andromba River

Antsahadinta - Vontovorona We continue our hike in the footsteps of the great king Andrianampoinimerina who reached Antsahadinta by this very beautiful ridge line that overlooks the valleys of the Sisoany and Amdromba. There remain many tombs, beautiful standing stones, ancient sites and beautiful perched villages. Vontovorona - Alakamisy By a path descending the western slope of Antsahadinta, we descend back into the rice plain and head towards the Andromba river. A traditional flat-bottomed barge awaits us there and we begin to glide along the water through the countryside towards National Road 1 where our vehicle awaits us. Alakamisy - Antananarivo By car we return to Antananarivo in mid-afternoon.
