The spirit of travel
The first rays of sunlight pierce the morning mist that envelops the sacred hills of Imerina. From Ampangabe, ancestral paths wind between emerald rice paddies and perched villages, where the echoes of the great king Andrianampoinimerina still resound. Each step reveals a piece of history: defensive ditches dug into red laterite, stone burial monuments bearing witness to a glorious past, sacred forests preserved on the slopes of Antsahadinta.
The route follows the ridges of Ambatomalaza where the silhouettes of twelve royal hills stretch as far as the eye can see. In the villages, elders tell the legends of the unifying sovereign while children rush up, astonished to encounter hikers in the heart of this authentic countryside. The descent towards the Andromba river ends beautifully: a traditional flat-bottomed barge glides silently between lush banks, bringing the walkers back to civilization via the waterways that the king once traveled himself.
This three-day hike offers a rare immersion into the Merina soul, far from classic tourist circuits, in the footsteps of a monarch who shaped the history of Madagascar.

Day-by-day itinerary
Walking tour among the remains of Southern Imerina

From hill to hill to reach Antsahadinta
Early in the morning, we quickly climb onto the Ambatomalaza ridge line unfolding towards the north. The view is splendid over the great plain leading to the Madagascar capital. We continue our journey towards the valley and then the hill opposite, towards the west. Antsahadinta comes into view. It is easily recognizable by its sacred forest which rises in tiers on its south flank.
This sacred hill is a living testimony to the history of the Merina kingdoms. Once we have crossed the remains of defensive ditches, we enter the village. We leave our belongings in the shade of fig trees and begin to visit the places steeped in History. We set up our bivouac not far from the village.
