The spirit of travel

Discover the beautiful region of Ampefy, the favorite destination of Tananarivo residents just 3 hours' drive west of the capital, Antananarivo. Explore these trails that wind between lakes and the ancient Itasy volcanoes, in the heart of unique landscapes on the Big Island, dotted with traditional villages of the Highlands.

Crossing these volcanic landscapes of lakes, mountains and rivers, we reach Antsirabe, and the central Highlands, and discover this former thermal city.

The descent towards the East coast offers us the opportunity to explore Ranomafana and its national park, populated by lemurs, birds, reptiles and endemic plants of all kinds, an exceptional and easily accessible biodiversity.

We will then navigate along the Pangalanes Canal, meeting the local life of the fishermen of the South-East, before ending this beautiful loop with the humid primary forest of Andasibe, sanctuary of the largest of the lemurs: the Indri-indri.

Departing from the lodge; we set out on foot to discover the typical environment of the Highlands. Nestled at the foot of the mighty Ibity Massif, the Manandona Valley is rich and prosperous. The land here is also very generous and rice is the main crop.

After gaining elevation by following good trails crossing the foothills, we return to the valley to meet the inhabitants. All are rice farmers and own zebu cattle, some raise silkworms, others are blacksmiths, basket weavers or carpenters. Traditional craftsmanship is omnipresent.

Our guides are part of a local association for the development of the region. They will be able to tell you about their activities, local customs, traditions and development.

On this aquatic boulevard, we encounter barges, "bush boats" (river taxis), canoes and rafts transporting local products shipped to the nearest towns, including bananas and other seasonal fruits, cassava, fish, dried ravinala leaves for the roofs of huts… Spontaneous greetings and joyful cries from children on the banks accompany us throughout our journey. After breakfast, we drive to Antananarivo, which we will reach in late morning. We discover the typical landscapes of the Highlands, the soil becomes redder and the traditional houses of the Imerina in red brick and rammed earth gradually replace the wooden houses of the Betsimitsaraka.

The Malagasy capital is full of artisanal and cultural gems. It is here that the best artists and craftspeople of the country are gathered, whether for ironwork, leather goods, marquetry, basketry and many other fields.

A few examples of places to see are theironwork studio of Violette and Dieudonné, the Izaho leather goods workshop which works with zebu leather, and the numerous artisanal galleries of the capital. Is'Art Galerie is also a leading cultural venue, which offers concerts, exhibitions, workshops, a bar and restaurant, as well as an artisanal boutique.
