In the heart of the Zafimaniry land
Duration
15 days
The spirit of travel
This journey is a personal creation by Marc Rakotomamonjy, who has mapped its route and leads the expedition. It is his interpretation of the Zafimaniry country that he invites you to share: that of a man who has traversed these paths for many years and has made it, through countless comings and goings and stays in the villages, his chosen territory. Where most operators stop at Sakaivo and return to Antoetra, Marc chooses to continue eastward, along paths that only villagers still use. The crossing to Ranomafana is his signature: nine days of trekking to connect the two ends of the same world, from eucalyptus plateaus to the humid forests of the eastern escarpment. An itinerary he has constructed step by step, in agreement with village chiefs, in keeping with the rhythm of the seasons and the hosting capacity of the hamlets he passes through. You will trek with him each day, share his bivouacs and his perspective on this region to which he returns tirelessly. A journey with a human dimension, in small groups, that owes as much to the precision of Détours Madagascar's logistics as to the sensitivity of its creator.
In the heart of the Eastern Highlands of Madagascar, the Zafimaniry country is home to one of the most singular cultures of the Great Island. Recognized by UNESCO for its art of carved wood transmitted from generation to generation, this Betsileo forest people live in perched villages that no vehicle can reach. This is where this great trek begins, which will take you from Antoetra, the only village accessible by road, to the gates of Ranomafana National Park, at the edge of the humid tropical forest. Over the course of nine days of trekking, the landscape transforms. Eucalyptus and mimosa plateaus, terraced rice fields and granite peaks give way to deep valleys, singing rivers and, finally, the primary forest of exceptional biodiversity. You will cross hamlets where time seems suspended, sleep under canvas or with local families, share cooking over wood fires and evening songs. At the end of the journey, the thermal baths of Ranomafana and the golden lemurs of the national park crown an unforgettable crossing, off the beaten path.
The trek is possible from April to November, but the best conditions are found between May and September. We prefer June and September: dry trails, cool temperatures at altitude (sometimes close to 0 °C at night at 1,800 m), supportable heat on the eastern slope, and Ranomafana hotels less saturated than in July–August.
Trek of moderate difficulty, over 9 days of stages of 4 to 5 hours, with moderate elevation changes (up to +/−700 m on certain days). The trail is generally well-marked but can be slippery after rain, particularly on the descent to Ifanadiana. No technical sections: no climbing, no exposed passages. Regular physical fitness (weekend hiker) is sufficient.
The trek is led personally by Marc Rakotomamonjy, creator of this journey and trek leader for Détours Madagascar, accompanied by a local English-speaking Zafimaniry guide who knows every trail of the crossing, a dedicated Détours cook and a team of local porters whose number is adjusted to the group size. The 4×4 vehicles and their drivers ensure the connection between Tana–Antoetra and then pick up the group at Ranomafana.
The stages of your journey
Day-by-day itinerary
Heading towards the Madagascan Highlands via the mythical RN7
Through the Zafimaniry villages and the Lehibory ridges
Warm or cold appetizer - Main course - Dessert
First full day of hiking, and one of the most beautiful stages of the journey. The trail leaves the Antoetra plateau with a descent between eucalyptus and mimosa trees before climbing up to Lehibory Peak (1,885 m), the highest point of the day and an exceptional viewpoint over the valley. Stops in the villages of Ifasina and Tetezandrotra, where Zafimaniry craftsmen open their workshops: doors, shutters and ornate lintels tell, through their geometric patterns, this people's relationship with ancestors and the forest. Long steep descent fitted with steps carved into the stone down to Sakaivo, considered the most beautiful village in Zafimaniry country.
Sakaivo: Fanandrana Waterfall and Immersion
A day to slow down and savor Sakaivo. In the morning, short hike to the Fanandrana waterfall, where you can swim in the pools. Return to the village to share a meal with your host. The afternoon is dedicated to meeting the locals: sculpture demonstration, making a Zafimaniry lounger, weaving workshop. If luck is on your side, evening with music and traditional dombolo dances around the fire, under a rare starry sky.
Between Zafimaniry valleys and first bivouac in the heart of nature.
We leave Sakaivo and head East, into a much less frequented section of Zafimaniry country. The trail descends towards an enclosed valley, crosses terraced rice fields and several streams, before climbing up the other slope. The vegetation gradually becomes more diverse, a sign of the eastern influence. First camp of the crossing, set up in the middle of nature near the hamlet of Ampasina.
Through the Hills and Villages of Zafimaniry Country
A hilly stage that alternates gentle climbs and scenic descents. You walk through several hamlets where daily life unfolds before your eyes: women pounding rice, children returning from the fields, men working with wood. The presence of foreign walkers is rare, and the welcome is warm and curious. The vegetation becomes noticeably more humid, the forest increasingly present. Arrival in Maromanana in late afternoon.

Forest Immersion
The forest is now taking over the open landscapes. The trail follows watercourses, crosses wooden footbridges and winds between tree ferns. Fauna and flora change: endemic birds, butterflies, first orchids. It is the gentle transition between the Highlands and the eastern slope. Bivouac in a clearing near Ambodimanga, the "foot of the mango tree".

Discovery of Local Expertise
Deliberately shorter day after several challenging stages. You arrive late morning in Sandrakely, a charming little village where you are welcomed by a local resident. The afternoon is free: rest, reading, observing village activities, basket and raffia mat making. A gentle interlude before the more demanding stages of the following two days.
Ridge crossing and panoramic views on both sides
The most demanding stage of the route, but also one of the most spectacular. The trail climbs onto a ridge that offers, in clear weather, vast views to the East towards the foothills of the rainforest, and to the West towards the distant Highlands. Extended break at the summit for picnic. Technical descent in the afternoon to Tsaratanana, "the good earth", where the camp is set up.
Descent towards tropical vegetation and arrival at Ifanadiana
Tsaratanana → Ifanadiana
Tsaratanana → Ifanadiana
You switch today to the eastern slope. The descent is gradual, in an increasingly tropical environment: lychee trees, coffee plantations, banana trees, first vanilla and clove plantations. The heat rises, as does the humidity. Upon arrival in Ifanadiana, a district capital nestled on RN25, you rediscover the modernity of a small commercial town: markets, shops, lively atmosphere. Dinner and night in a simple lodge, your first real bed in several days.

End of the rainforest trek
Last day of trekking, and quite an impressive one. The trail gradually climbs towards Ranomafana, crossing through Fiadanana and several mountain hamlets. The humid forest closes in around you, denser and more alive with sound. Calls of lemurs in the distance, songs of endemic birds, scents of the forest floor. You arrive in Ranomafana in late afternoon: reunion with Détours vehicles and your luggage, hot shower and thermal bath as an option to celebrate the end of the trek.

Day trip to the reserve or park discovery
This day is a buffer day, kept in reserve to absorb any possible weather or logistical contingency during the first ten days. If it has not been used during the trek, it is converted into an additional discovery day of Ranomafana national park: long circuit Vatoharanana or Varibolomena, observation of golden lemurs at dawn, or rest day according to group preferences. Possibility of a night excursion around the park in the evening to observe nocturnal species.
Discovery of Ranomafana National Park and thermal bath
A day dedicated to discovering Ranomafana National Park, listed as a natural UNESCO World Heritage site. Early departure with an authorized naturalist guide from Madagascar National Parks for the Talatakely circuit: primary forest, Namorona River, waterfalls, observation of lemurs (red-bellied lemur, Edwards' sifaka, and with a bit of luck, the rare golden bamboo lemur). Return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, relaxation at the Ranomafana thermal baths, natural hot waters at 38°C, perfect for tired muscles.
Return to the Highlands, from Ambositra to Antsirabe
Long day of driving to head back up to the Highlands. The RN25 crosses the eastern slope until it joins the RN7, which you then follow heading due north, towards Ambositra and then Antsirabe. An opportunity to revisit, in reverse, the landscapes you crossed on the way there, now seen through the filter of everything you have seen and experienced. Lunch in Ambositra, final stop at the woodcraft artisans. Free dinner in Antsirabe, quiet evening at the hotel.

Return route to the capital
Final stage, shorter, which brings you back to Antananarivo. Possibility of a stop in Ambatolampy to visit a traditional aluminum foundry, where Malagasy pots are handmade from recycled metal. Arrival in Tana in the middle of the day. According to your schedule, transfer to the airport or extension of your stay.
