Did you know that Madagascar is home to some incredible climbing sites? They're even renowned as among the most beautiful in the world. At Détours Madagascar, we can create a custom itinerary for you that allows you to climb across all corners of the island.

Climbing sites in the north:

Vallée des Perroquets: routes from 6a to 7c.

This limestone rock formation is located in the north of the island near Diego-Suarez. It features vertical and overhanging profiles. The holds are primarily pockets and concretions. The rock sits within splendid natural surroundings—a protected forest—about 1 hour 30 minutes' hike from Diego-Suarez.

Montagne des Français: routes from 3 to 8a.

Just a few minutes' drive from Diego-Suarez, followed by 40 to 50 minutes of hiking to reach the climbing area. 180 routes in overhanging, vertical, and slab formations await you. The holds are ledges. This limestone massif overlooks Diego Bay and its iconic sugarloaf peak—one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Red Island.

Nosy Hara: 80 routes from 5 to 8a

A little slice of paradise, still in Diego-Suarez province, where many routes remain to be developed. After a full day of climbing, you can unwind on pristine white sand beaches and gaze across the Mozambique Channel. The profiles feature vertical and overhanging sections, with ledge and column-style holds.

When to climb in the north?

Climbing is possible year-round, except during the rainy season (January, February).

From March to December, island breezes make the heat bearable. It's an exceptionally pleasant period.

On Montagne des Français, we recommend visiting between May and November.

The walls of Tsaranoro in the south-central region:

The Tsaranoro massif is located approximately 50 km from the city of Fianarantsoa. It offers immense granite walls reaching nearly 800 meters high. Today, around thirty routes ranging from 3 to 8b can be found here, making it an ideal destination for both beginners and experienced climbers. After climbing, it's also an excellent site for paragliding.

When to climb in the Tsaranoro Massif?

For the south and Tsaranoro walls, the best period runs from March to December, with shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) being particularly favorable.

From June to September, warm clothing is advisable, as you'll be at approximately 900 meters altitude.
