Cape Saint-Mary
At the far southern tip of Madagascar, Cape Saint-Mary unveils wind-swept cliffs, a reserve for endemic tortoises, and humpback whale watching opportunities.
Cape Saint-Mary marks the southernmost point of Madagascar. Also known as Tanjona Vohimena, this region lies 250 km from Fort-Dauphin and roughly 60 kilometers from Tsihombe. It is particularly renowned for its magnificent fine-sand beach and spectacular dunes. The Cape Saint-Mary Special Reserve deserves equal attention, sheltering two species of endangered terrestrial tortoises: the radiated tortoise and Pyxis arachnoides. Within the dunes, visitors may occasionally spot an endemic sand lizard native to the region, along with fragments of elephant bird shells (vorombe, an extinct species). Offshore, the migration of humpback whales can be observed from June through October.
