Around 30 km from Fianarantsoa, Sahambavy is Madagascar's sole tea estate. An artificial lake, rows of tea plants and factory tours make for an authentic nature and rural stop in the highlands.

Sahambavy is a village in Madagascar's central highlands, roughly thirty kilometers southeast of Fianarantsoa. It is best known for housing the country's only tea estate: the Sahambavy lake and tea plantation form a landscape of verdant hills that stands out against the reddish laterite terrain surrounding it. The site attracts visitors seeking peaceful nature, gentle hiking and authentic rural tourism.

Quick info at a glance

  • Access: from Fianarantsoa by taxi-brousse or private vehicle; the road is partially paved.
  • Train: the FCE line (Fianarantsoa–East Coast) serves Sahambavy — check operating days with the operator, service is irregular.
  • Recommended duration: half a day to a full day depending on activities chosen.
  • Dress code: hiking shoes recommended for plantation trails.

What to see

The heart of the site is the tea plantation, exploited since the 1970s, whose regular rows cover the hillsides around an artificial lake. You can observe the pickers at work (depending on season) and visit the processing mill to understand the drying and sorting stages. The lake itself offers a mirror surface framed by tea plants and eucalyptus forests.

History and context

The plantation was created during Madagascar's socialist era to diversify export crops in the highlands. It remains one of the country's rare tea productions today, marketed under a local brand. The arrival of the FCE railway in the early twentieth century opened up the region and facilitated the transport of harvests to the coast.

Highlights of the visit

The tea plantation and mill

A guided tour of the mill allows you to follow the production chain: withering, rolling, fermentation, drying. A tasting at the end gives you the chance to compare the different qualities produced on site.

Sahambavy lake

The artificial lake, surrounded by tea plants and dense vegetation, lends itself to a peaceful walk along its shores. The atmosphere is particularly soothing early in the morning, when mist lifts from the water.

Hiking in the hills

Marked trails lead up to the surrounding ridges for sweeping views of the entire plantation and lake. The walk is accessible at a moderate level and lasts between one and two hours depending on the trail chosen.

Photography tips

Morning light is ideal for photographing the lake and rows of tea plants, before the mist clears. The pickers at work make lively subjects — always ask permission before photographing them. Low-angle shots from the ridges add depth to the tea rows.

Location and access

Sahambavy is located about 30 km from Fianarantsoa, the regional capital of Haute Matsiatra. The main road from Fianarantsoa is passable in a standard vehicle outside the rainy season; during the rainy season (December–March), a 4×4 is preferable. The FCE train, when running, offers a scenic journey through the hills — check locally for departure days.
