The Manambolo river descent carries you along the "Malagasy meanders." The beliefs, trades, and joie de vivre animating the daily lives of local inhabitants are simply fascinating. The journey begins in the heart of the Bongolava mountains and passes through the incredible Tsingy of Bemaraha. If your Madagascar voyage takes you to the western side of the island, allow yourself a Manambolo river descent with bivouac camping to enjoy an extraordinary natural landscape.
The Manambolo River Descent
An atypical and promising departure
The river originates in the Highlands and cascades down the slopes of Bongolava to reach the Menabe plains. The descent along the waterway proves most pleasant, unfolding slowly with the current, giving you time to appreciate the region's natural diversity—hills and rocks sculpted by erosion.
The best starting point for the Manambolo river descent is undoubtedly the village of Ankavandra. Note that there are rituals to be observed before launching canoes or pirogues. It is a "fomba" (tradition) consisting of asking the goodwill of the river's spirits for a safe voyage. From Ankavandra to the Bemaraha Tsingy, count approximately 200 km over 4 days and 3 nights of bivouac trekking, with meals and campsite on the riverbank, logistics handled by an experienced crew.
A timeless journey
On the riverbanks nestle a few small villages that animate the river through fishing, livestock raising, and agriculture. You can make stops and meet an engaging and distinctive population. The villagers will greet you with smiles and teach you the simplicity of life. Far from any civilization and communication means, you will understand that very little is needed to be happy.
During the dry season, impressive sandbanks form. You can then observe various bird species such as knob-billed ducks, plovers, herons, teals, great egrets, and African fish eagles coming to enjoy the freshness of the water and surrounding vegetation.
The Manambolo Gorges
Passage through an unreal world
Reaching the Bemaraha massif, you will face a completely different landscape. The banks give way to sand slopes sculpted by the river and erosion over time. Small villages and steep landscapes yield to impressive gorges. The Manambolo gorges are notably among the most beautiful sites on the Great Island. Gallery forests have managed to develop on the cliff slopes. The river waters mix with the red laterite silts of the gorges, bringing atypical charm to this enchanting environment.
Incomparable rock formations
The sheer cliffs hide ancient tombs of Vazimba (the legendary first Malagasy people), the only vestiges and traces of human presence. Here, on your pirogue, you will experience the pleasant sensation of being cut off from the rest of the world. You will find some comfort upon reaching the foot of the Bemaraha Tsingy park, in a small hotel. Expect even more spectacular scenery when visiting this reserve formed by karst formations, resembling cathedrals of sharp limestone rocks, dotted with lush vegetation and inhabited by endemic fauna.
