Alpine Atmospheres in the Highlands
The Highlands are defined by a magnificent granite ridge, creating powerful massifs with smooth grey domes.
The Andringitra mountain range and the splendid Tsaranoro valley, Mount Ibity south of Antsirabe, the Vavavato foothills and the rice paddies of Betafo, the Imerina region with its sacred hills and red villages—these are all exceptional venues for stunning hikes.
In the northwestern part of the country, the majestic Tsaratanana volcanic massif creates a unique climatic barrier, allowing the Sambirano region and Nosy Be to enjoy an idyllic climate. It is also home to Madagascar's highest peak, Maromokotra, which rises to 2,876 meters above sea level.
In the Sava region, in northeastern Madagascar, the Marojejy summits stand tall. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this impressive massif boasts remarkable vegetation. Trekking through the Marojejy massif is a true expedition.
Lakes and Volcanoes of Itasy and Betafo
Exploiting weaknesses in this rigid and fractured mantle, magma—basalt in formation—has sculpted a series of volcanoes overlooking a multitude of lakes. The Itasy region is truly beautiful to explore on foot. From Ampefy to Lily Falls, from powerful springs to bubbling geysers that remind us that telluric activity remains very much alive.
The Ruiniform Sandstone of Isalo and Makay
The sandstone and limestone sedimentary layers, meanwhile, established themselves in the western part of the country. They form a series of spectacular barriers. The ruiniform sandstone with fantastical erosion patterns of the Isalo and mysterious Makay massifs offer beautiful hiking escapades through pristine environments. They evoke the grandeur of the Saharan Tassili.
Limestone Plateaus and Tsingy
The limestone belt extends from the extreme south to the extreme north of the Great Island. Spectacular erosion of these sedimentary layers has given rise to astonishing places such as the Bemaraha Tsingy and the Ankarana Tsingy.
