Packing Your Suitcase
Here's a checklist to help you pack for your stay in Madagascar.
- Opt for a large backpack or soft-sided luggage. Wheeled suitcases won't be practical—you'll need flexibility to load and stack gear in 4x4 vehicles.
- Bring a smaller daypack for daily excursions. A waterproof backpack or protective cover is essential to safeguard your belongings during the rainy season (November to March) and protect your documents.
Here's a checklist to help you pack for your stay in Madagascar.
Essential documents—don't leave home without them:
- Your valid passport
- International and/or domestic flight tickets
- Your travel insurance and emergency medical coverage documents
- Your vaccination record (not mandatory, but recommended)
- Your blood type card, if available
Clothing:
- April to October; bring warm layers: a quality sweater or lightweight down jacket, trousers, socks, and a scarf or wrap—evenings cool considerably, especially on the Highlands.
- Trek and hiking gear for outdoor activities: sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with ankle support that feel comfortable.
- A waterproof jacket (K-way or Gore-Tex style).
- Beach essentials: swimsuit, sarong, shorts, or dress.
- A hat or cap.
- If space permits, pack smart-casual pieces for dining out and exploring towns, plus flip-flops and everyday shoes or trainers.
Health & Toiletries:
- A first-aid kit.
- Feminine hygiene products (sanitary pads or tampons); these can be hard to find locally.
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
- Insect repellent or citronella to protect against mosquito bites.
- High-SPF sunscreen (minimum SPF 30).
- Sunglasses (UV Category 3 or higher).
- Biodegradable laundry detergent, in case you need to wash clothes.
Other essentials:
- A camera to capture memorable shots. A telephoto lens is ideal for wildlife; modern compact cameras offer excellent quality with portability and discretion in urban areas.
- Solar charger or spare batteries for your camera.
- A notebook and pen to jot down your impressions.
- For backcountry adventurers: a multi-tool knife, torch (flashlight), sleeping bag, and perhaps an inflatable pillow.
Note that the accommodations we arrange provide sheets, soap, and bath towels.
