Taking advantage of weak zones in this rigid, fractured mantle, magma—basalt in the making—has created a series of volcanic phenomena; the Itasy region is a beautiful example. Sandstone and limestone sedimentary layers have established themselves in the western part of the country. They form a series of spectacular barriers. The ruiniform sandstones with their phantasmagoric erosions of the Isalo and Makay massifs evoke our Saharan Tassili. The limestone belt, meanwhile, stretches from the far south to the far north of the Great Island.
