The world's greatest orchid diversity

Madagascar possesses the characteristics of a miniature continent due to its isolation from the rest of the world. The island separated from Africa and India 160 million years ago, becoming a land where nature flourishes and reigns. Humans arrived on the island only around 2,000 years ago, and predators, apart from the small fosa, are virtually non-existent.

This allowed animals such as lemurs to thrive and evolve with complete freedom. Plants like the orchid were also able to proliferate and evolve in a favorable and isolated environment. This very particular environment appears to go hand in hand with endemism, since the majority of Madagascar's biodiversity is endemic.

As for orchids, the Great Island is home to more than 1,200 orchid species, of which around a thousand are endemic! This represents the highest endemism rate for orchids and the world's greatest orchid diversity.

Orchids at the pinnacle of evolution

Madagascar's orchids are remarkable for their beauty, fragrance, and their ingenious survival and reproduction strategies. For example, Leporella fimbriata secretes a pheromone to which male Myrmeca ants cannot resist.

Satyrium also maintains a very special relationship with the sunbird, a small bird that loves the orchid's nectar while contributing to its pollination. Madagascar's star orchid (Angraecum sesquipedale) produces nectar that feeds a species of long-tongued nocturnal moth.

Another species has adopted an even more complex pollination method: Stanhopea graveolens. This orchid emits a strong odor that attracts midges, which in turn attract spiders, the prey of the hummingbird pollinator. The Bulbophyllum occlusum orchid also baits flies, but it is the insect itself that pollinates the flower.

Natural wonders to protect and admire

The rainforests of Atsinanana (eastern Madagascar) constitute a sanctuary for orchids. It is a true delight to explore the Andasibe-Mantadia national park, the Analamazaotra reserve, or Mitsinjo forest, as the air is filled with their pleasant fragrances. Angraecum longicalcar has the particular characteristic of releasing its fragrance only at nightfall.

Their beauty is also exceptional, displaying splendid colorful flowers, ranging from brilliant white to violet through yellow, orange, and more. Among the most emblematic species is Cymbidiella falcigera, known as the black orchid (now difficult to find in the wild), and Eulophiella roempleriana, which boasts a lovely fuchsia-pink corolla.

Orchids are recognizable by their three-petaled flowers: two identical upper petals and one different lower petal depending on the species. It's worth noting that vanilla is also an orchid, and Madagascar is home to eight wild vanilla species. Vanilla planifolia, which has made the island renowned, was however imported and cultivated in the north and east of the country.

Mount Ibity (in the highlands in Vakinankaratra) and Ranomafana national park (in the southwest) are also excellent orchid observation sites.
