Choisir de voyager au plus près des cultures malgaches, c'est accepter que le voyage ne se mesure pas en kilomètres parcourus mais en rencontres tissées. À Madagascar, dix-huit groupes ethniques cohabitent sur une même île, chacun avec sa langue, ses interdits (fady) et son rapport singulier aux razana, les ancêtres qui veillent encore sur les vivants.

Sur les Hauts Plateaux merina, autour d'Antananarivo et d'Ambositra, vous croiserez des villages de briques rouges où l'artisanat du bois sculpté et de la soie sauvage se transmet d'une génération à l'autre. Plus au sud, chez les Betsileo puis les Bara, l'élevage du zébu structure l'économie autant que les rites de passage. Sur la côte, les Vezo lisent encore la mer comme un livre ouvert et naviguent à la pirogue à balancier.
