The Pangalanes Canal will be featured on the Franco-German channel ARTE - Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 4:30 PM French time. Detours Madagascar, true to our commitments, we work to showcase the unique heritage of the Great Island. Recently, we provided the technical and logistical support for the filming in Madagascar for the Invitation au voyage program on the Franco-German television channel ARTE
The segments cover some notable heritage sites of Madagascar, namely the Merina kingdom and its 12 hills, Sainte-Marie Island and the Pangalanes Canal. This program is presented by Linda Lorin and broadcasts Monday through Friday at 4:30 PM since March 2017. Its purpose is to inspire viewers to travel through escape, discovery, and culture. It allows viewers to discover or revisit places and artists that belong to our shared heritage—cultural, artistic, and natural.
In a nutshell: The creation of the Pangalanes Canal, initiated in the late 19th century, was one of the greatest construction projects that would forever mark Madagascar—the Suez Canal of Madagascar.
This watercourse carved by human hands remains a well-traveled route to this day. While the northern section of the canal is frequented by pirogues carrying passengers and provisions toward the major port of Toamasina, the southern section sees far less traffic. Our journey will begin in the southern part of the Pangalanes... We set out to discover breathtaking nature, between forest and ocean.
