The spirit of travel

The whistle of the Fianarantsoa train echoes through the humid forests of eastern Madagascar. This mythical line from the thirties winds between tea plantations and palm groves before revealing the Indian Ocean. On the Pangalanes Canal, your barge glides at the rhythm of fishing pirogues, crossing riverside villages and river merchants in a symphony of spontaneous greetings.

From Manakara to Mahanoro, the lagoons reveal their secrets: bamboo forests, giant raphias, rare orchids nested in this vital artery of 665 kilometers. Whistling ducks and kingfishers accompany your progress towards Sainte-Marie island, a former buccaneer's refuge turned peaceful haven with coconut beaches. Between July and September, humpback whales transform these waters into a giant nursery.

This journey reveals the deep soul of Malagasy fihavanana, this philosophy of sharing that unites Betsileo and coastal communities. A voyage where each stopover tells Madagascar in its most authentic diversity, far from the beaten path.

Flight departing from Paris to Antananarivo

Paris Roissy CDG - Antananarivo You are flying to Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. A member of the Détours Madagascar team welcomes you upon arrival at Ravinala airport in Antananarivo. Transfer and check-in at your hotel in the city center. Antananarivo is the capital of Madagascar, located in the Central Highlands region of the island. Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, is often the essential first step for any European visiting the country. Upon arrival in Tana, as it is called here, the sense of disorientation is immediate. European landmarks disappear, giving way to a mixture of amazement and emotion, marking the beginning of a new adventure.

Trekking in the hills of Antsirabe: Mount Ibity

Mont Ibity•English-speaking guide
The peasant association working for the development of rural areas through tourism in Manandona Andranovelona hosts us with a family that is a member of the association. Immersion and cultural exchange are the watchwords of this stay. Here, we share the daily life of villagers and can participate in their activities: brick-making, rice transplanting or harvesting depending on the season, reforestation... Alongside a guide trained by the association, we will take a walk through the Manandona valley to the Amboponana waterfall which invites us to swim. The strongest will be able to opt for a medium-mountain hike at the foot of the Ibity massif or a trek for the most adventurous to the summit of Ibity where the view is breathtaking. In the early evening, you will witness a typical animation of the most memorable kind. Around a campfire, villagers gather alongside traditional musicians to sing and dance. It is their way of showing their joy and gratitude to travelers who come to visit them. The Malagasy spirit: fihavanana means that one is united in joy as in sadness, hence the presence of village neighbors at this folkloric evening which will offer you an intense moment.

Departing from the guesthouse; we set off on foot to discover the typical environment of the Highlands. Nestled at the foot of the powerful Ibity Massif, the Manandona Valley is rich and prosperous. The land here is also very generous and rice is the main crop.

After gaining altitude by following good trails across the foothills, we return to the valley to meet the local people. All are rice farmers and own zebu cattle; some raise silkworms, others are blacksmiths, basket weavers or carpenters. Traditional craftsmanship is omnipresent.

Our guides are part of a local association for the development of the region. They will be able to tell you about their activities, customs and traditions, and local development.

Second night with a local family.

From Fianarantsoa to Manakara aboard Madagascar's unique tourist train

Manakara•English-speaking guide
Fianarantsoa - Manakara Transfer to Fianarantsoa railway station. We reach the town of Manakara by train. Built in the thirties, the line is full of charm! A beautiful journey with admirable landscapes and lush vegetation awaits us. We cross tea plantations, banana groves, timber forests, rice paddies, palm groves before discovering the Indian Ocean. We meet travelers and merchants, and are soon immersed in the atmosphere of this train that is so vital to the region. Picnic lunch on board the train. Arrival in the late afternoon in Manakara. Transfer to the hotel. Please note that: - this day on the train remains subject to the proper functioning of the line, which sometimes reserves a few surprises for us! - The train takes you to Manampatrana, then you will continue by car to reach Manakara. - We offer an alternative solution: instead of the train, we offer you a draisine experience to reach Manakara. "This experience is included in our current proposal". Here are the alternative programs offered in case of cancellation of the train journey: We will first visit Madagascar's only tea plantation, and taste this characteristic tea. The factory was built in 1978 by the Malagasy State. It was then privatized by a Joint Stock Company. On average, 20 tonnes of wet leaves are harvested per day, from the 355 hectares of plantations, of which 94 hectares are managed by farmers. We will then visit a typical Tanala village, located 15km from Ranomafana on the road between Kelilalina and Ifanadiana. This forest people of South-East Madagascar has always remained independent of Malagasy Royalty, and their very specific culture therefore remains preserved. They live from forest resources: bamboo, wild honey, fruit, resin, medicinal plants… The village comprises more than 57 households, with traditional houses on stilts made of falafa, bamboo and earth. A short easy walk of 15 to 20 minutes allows us to reach the hilltop. We will then reach the town of Manakara by road.

Boarding on the Pangalanes Canal aboard a barge: Ambohitsara and Ambodirafia

Ambodirafia•English-speaking guide
Mananjary - Ambodirafia After breakfast, departure for a river cruise on the Pangalanes Canal. The Canal stretches along the East coast of Madagascar between Farafangana in the south and Foulpointe in the north. This waterway, 665 km long, is much safer than the very turbulent Indian Ocean. On this aquatic boulevard, we encounter barges, "bush boats" (river bush taxis), pirogues and rafts transporting local products destined for the nearest towns, including bananas and other seasonal fruits, cassava, fish, dried ravinala leaves for the roofs of traditional huts… Spontaneous greetings and joyful cries from children on the banks accompany us throughout our journey. We are witnesses to unusual and unforgettable scenes of life.

As we navigate, we encounter "bush boats" and the ballet of pirogues. Picnic lunch on board. Strolling along the Canal, we reach Masomeloka then Asohihy at the end of the day.

Discovery of Madagascar crafts treasures, and night return flight to Paris

The Malagasy capital is brimming with artisanal and cultural gems. It is here that the country's best artists and craftsmen are gathered, whether for ironwork, leather goods, marquetry, basketry and many other fields. Some examples of places to see are Violette and Dieudonné's ironwork workshop, Izaho leather goods workshop which works with zebu leather, and the multiple artisanal galleries of the capital. Is'Art Galerie is also a leading cultural venue, offering concerts, exhibitions, workshops, a bar and restaurant, as well as an artisanal shop. We also tour the city's major landmarks with our driver-guide. The Upper Town of Antananarivo is on its way to being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gradually, we climb towards the Queen's Palace, from which the 360° view over the entire city is splendid, at the very top of Analamanga hill, the former name of the city. We will pass successively through Andohalo square, a major site of Merina aristocracy where kings and queens made their speeches and discussed government decisions with the population. Evening transfer to the airport, assistance with boarding on the flight to Paris, overnight flight.

Your guide will pick you up at your hotel. We're heading off for a city walk alongside a historian. On foot, we explore the area around Independence Square, an essential place in the country's history with the presidential palace as a backdrop, the former residence of successive colonial governors who ruled the country. Then we climb up to the Queen's Palace, at the top of the Analamanga hill, the former name of the city. We will successively pass by Andohalo square, a major center of Merina aristocracy where kings and queens gave their speeches and discussed government decisions with the population.
