Nosy Be is a paradise island. Located in the Mozambique Channel near the northwest coast of Madagascar, its beauty and warm-hearted inhabitants make it worth a detour during your visit to Madagascar. Yet another treasure of the island makes this destination truly special: the Donia festival.
Donia, a National Point of Pride
Donia is a music festival founded in May 1994. The name, in the Sakalava dialect (spoken by local inhabitants), means "the good life." The COFESTIN, or Nosy Be Festival Organization Committee, orchestrates this major event. Since 1997, Donia has been recognized as Madagascar's Cultural Heritage because it brings together the culture of the Vanilla Islands (Madagascar, Réunion, Mayotte, Seychelles, and Mauritius). In 1998, it became the Indian Ocean Cultural Festival. On the international stage, it is the only Malagasy event named "Festival of World Music" by the World Music Expo (WOMEX) in Washington.
A Beautifully Diverse Celebration
Every year, Donia takes place during Pentecost weekend. An exception in 2018, when the festival runs from September 26-30. This festival lasts 5 to 7 days with highly varied programming. The festival typically features sporting events, conferences, and performances. What makes Donia truly special is the opening carnival, which mobilizes the entire island of Nosy Be for a vibrant and colorful celebration. Since 2002, motocross competitions have been part of the festival program. In 2012, activities expanded further with the introduction of a Miss and Mister Donia pageant. Each year, the event showcases emerging local talent.
At the Heart of the Fragrant Island's Spirit
Whether day or night, during Donia, celebration reigns. Daytime brings cultural activities, sporting events, and gatherings. In the evening, visitors experience live concerts on the grand stage at the Ambodivoanio Stadium in Hell-Ville, Nosy Be's city center. As spectators or performers, everyone finds their place at the festival. This year marks Donia's 25th anniversary, promising an even more extraordinary program. Attending or participating in this festival is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate how warm-hearted the inhabitants of this fragrant island truly are. It also immerses you in a musical atmosphere of countless colors. So, when you travel to Madagascar, experience this magical moment—it's a beautiful adventure and discovery that will mark your journey!
