Moraingy, Traditional Malagasy Wrestling

Moraingy, la lutte malagasy from Sylvain PHILIP on Vimeo. During a Détours Madagascar journey alongside the teams from Lodge des Terres Blanches, we witnessed Moraingy, the traditional combat sport.
This wrestling form is practiced primarily along Madagascar's coasts, in Mayotte, the Comoros, and in a different form in Réunion. Moraingy brings two young fighters face to face, and serves as an occasion to gather the population who express their enthusiasm and rally behind their favorites. On the central square, a circle forms around and encourages the protagonists. Less brutal than boxing, this sport demands agility, speed, and flexibility. Wide splits, hand landings, leg sweeps. This spectacular and physical sport was once a way to train for combat.
