4 must-see sporting events in Madagascar

Mar 05 2025

Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, captivates with its breathtaking landscapes and warm, welcoming people. Each region boasts its own unique climate and scenery, creating striking contrasts across the island. Why not combine your favorite sport with exploring this land of a thousand facets? If you love challenges, traveling, and pushing your limits, this article is for you. Here are the four most popular sporting events on the Big Island.

1. Trail racing

Explore the northern part of the island, passing through traditional villages and pristine sandy beaches. Participate in the Trail Racing event held in early July, a 150 km race over six days and six stages, with a 1,270 m positive elevation gain. This race is also a qualifier for the UTMB.

The organization encourages you to bring family or friends who can cheer you on or explore local tourist spots during the stages. Why not share this adventure with local athletes? Racing Madagascar collaborates with local sports federations to invite Malagasy athletes to participate. Compete with them and share unforgettable experiences.

2. Lemur Trophy

The Lemur Trophy is a team off-road raid (4x4, buggy, or quad) held in early November over ten days. The goal is to tour the southern part of Madagascar, discovering the island’s remote tracks, villages, and unexplored regions that showcase its beauty.

This is not just a human adventure but also a humanitarian one. Participants must bring a humanitarian project, such as school supplies, clothing, or cleaning products, to distribute along the way. You can join as a private team or represent your company. The winning team will be the one that covers the least distance, but don’t worry—plenty of clues will guide you on your way.

3. Trail de l’île rouge

Held annually in early June, the Trail de l’Île Rouge spans 14 days, taking participants on a journey across Madagascar from east to west in six stages. Covering 140 km with a 1,200 m positive elevation gain, this trail leads you through four of Madagascar’s iconic landmarks: The Tsiribihina River, the Tsingy de Bemaraha, the Avenue of the Baobabs, and the Mozambique Channel.

From Betafo, near the capital, to the final stage on Morondava’s beach, you’ll be cheered on by the local population. Hotels, transportation, and meals are included, so lace up your sneakers and get ready!

4. Isalo raid

Want to cross Madagascar’s National Park? The Isalo Raid, held in late July, offers just that. Choose between a grand raid of 45 km (2,500 m+) or a semi-raid of 25 km (1,200 m+) through the canyons, flora, and fauna of Isalo.

You’ll be provided with refreshments and meals along the way. Enjoy the stunning and diverse landscapes with the warm welcome of the Malagasy people.
