The most beautiful beaches in Southern Madagascar

Mar 07 2025

As the fifth-largest island in the world, with over 5,000 kilometers of coastline, Madagascar offers an abundance of stunning beaches. After a trip to southern Madagascar, visitors will likely remember the pristine shores of spots like Baie des Assassins, Beheloka, Libanona, Itampolo, and Nosy Ve.

Libanona

The southeast of Madagascar boasts picturesque beaches, and Libanona in Taolagnaro (also known as Fort-Dauphin) is a prime example. This beach, bordered by emerald waters and surrounded by lush greenery and hills, offers a breathtaking and idyllic setting perfect for a day-long escape.

Libanona is especially popular among surfing enthusiasts, thanks to its ideal winds and perfect waves. Nearby, visitors can explore other swimming spots such as the Evatraha Peninsula, Lokaro Beach, and Lake Manivo.

La baie des assassins

Despite its ominous name, Baie des Assassins is far from frightening. The name originates from a 19th-century tale involving British naval officers who were reportedly massacred on this beach. Today, however, it is a serene and peaceful location, ideal for relaxation and reflection.

Located near Andavadaoka and Tanambao, and just a few kilometers from the famous Mikea Forest, this southwestern coastal gem allows visitors to witness the traditional Vezo fishing boats and even embark on a sea adventure.

Beheloka

Beheloka is one of the many pristine beaches in southwestern Madagascar, characterized by its white sandy shores and translucent waters, all set in a secluded environment. Unfortunately, this pearl, located 250 km from Toliara, is slowly being eroded by the sea due to deforestation.

However, the coral reef remains intact, delighting divers who bring their own equipment. The local Vezo villagers are primarily fishermen and seaweed farmers. Visitors can enjoy activities such as camping on the beach and taking small boat trips.

Itampolo

Located 360 km south of Toliara, Itampolo amazes visitors with its vast stretches of dreamy beaches and endless white dunes. Unlike other secluded southwestern beaches, the village of Itampolo is relatively larger and more populated, yet it retains its charm.

The tranquil atmosphere, coupled with delightful swimming and diving opportunities, makes this destination unforgettable. The welcoming locals ensure that every visitor feels at home. Children, excited to see new faces, often run, play, and laugh along the beach while observing travelers.

Nosy Ve

On the southwestern coast, the island of Nosy Ve serves as a small natural sanctuary. It is a breeding ground for red-tailed tropicbirds, which migrate from other islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The beach, almost deserted, features coral-origin sand and a seabed teeming with marine life.

Equipped with just a snorkel and mask, visitors can dive to observe vibrant fish, such as clownfish, triggerfish, pipefish, moray eels, and more. Turtles and stingrays are also common sights.

For even more exploration, head to Anakao, located about 5 kilometers away. This extraordinary beach, with its consistently clear and shallow waters, offers sightings of whales, dolphins, and other marine life.
