The telephone network in Madagascar is reliable in major cities thanks to the development of the country's three providers: Orange (032), Airtel (033), and Telma (034).

You have several options for staying connected:

• Activate international data:

International data on your mobile is typically activated by default, but this can be very costly if you don't have an international plan. Be sure to disable it once you're on the plane.

• Purchase a local SIM card:

Buying a SIM card and credit top-ups in Madagascar is straightforward. Every 10 meters along the street, you'll find vendors operating from simple umbrellas or small kiosks. Before purchasing, make sure it's unlocked and functional. You'll receive a Malagasy number with a small communication credit.

Buying a phone is also possible. You'll find basic phones at very competitive prices, which can be worthwhile to avoid attracting thieves. In fact, many Malagasy people carry two phones: a smartphone for photos and internet, and a basic mobile for calls and SMS in town. If you'd like to get a phone or SIM card, a passport will be required. The mobile network is fairly well developed across Madagascar, though you may occasionally encounter areas without coverage.

Generally, the hotels we recommend offer Wi-Fi service.

With your smartphone and a Malagasy SIM card from Orange, you'll have free access to Messenger and Facebook, making communication easy.

Note that high-speed internet isn't a strong point in Madagascar—you'll need to be patient.
