Photography and Video in Madagascar

Your camera will become your best friend on the island. With the spectacular landscapes, the diversity of fauna and flora, and encounters with the Malagasy people, it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to snap some photos—and perhaps even discover a new passion!

Madagascar enjoys exceptional light, and unless you're chasing the image of a lemur in a dense forest, you won’t have to worry about lighting. Like in all tropical countries, the soft light of the morning and late afternoon is the most favorable for photography.

Most Malagasy people will not mind posing for a photo. However, some may be confused, wary, or even frightened. Others may try to turn it into an economic opportunity. In any case, it’s important to ask permission from the person you wish to photograph and respect their response. If they refuse, don’t insist, and if you promise to send the photo… make sure you do!

Also be aware of "fady," the local taboos in Madagascar. There are certain things you cannot photograph. If you are accompanied by a guide, they will inform you about these restrictions in real-time.

Here are some tips on photography gear, so you can make the most of your trip to Madagascar and share it with others upon your return: It would be a shame to arrive at the airport and realize you have everything, except the most important item: your camera. And of course, a fully charged battery is also recommended… so yes, you never know… but don’t forget it!

  • If you're using a DSLR and have multiple lenses, take at least two: a wide-angle lens (18-55mm) and a telephoto lens (55-250mm). There are beautiful landscapes to photograph, as well as many plants and small animals.
  • A spare, empty, and formatted memory card. Even if your stay isn’t long, you'll have peace of mind knowing you can take as many photos as you want. Plus… it doesn’t take up much space!
  • Don’t forget your battery charger, as well as a portable or solar charger. If you're on a camping circuit, you won’t have access to electrical outlets. Otherwise, the electrical outlets in Madagascar are the same as in France, so no adapter is needed.
  • It’s a good idea to bring a microfiber cloth to wipe dust off your lens. It would be a shame to return to France only to discover dust spots on your photos. A plastic bag is also recommended in case of rain.
  • For enthusiasts: a remote, tripod, and filters.
  • If you have space, a GoPro or similar action camera can be useful for filming activities (such as canoeing, sailing, diving, etc.).
